BIAW is confident Washington will protect natural gas as an energy choice

November 6, 2024

OLYMPIA…Executive Vice President Greg Lane of the Building Industry Association of Washington says BIAW is confident I-2066 will prevail with early results showing the initiative passing by 51.22% with roughly 52% of all registered voters’ ballots counted.

BIAW is confident

“We all know there are thousands more ballots to count but BIAW is confident that we’ll receive enough votes to win this,” Lane said. “When we prevail, voters will have sent a strong message to Olympia that families and businesses want to keep natural gas as an energy choice.”

More than half a million individual voters and more than 400 businesses came together to bring I-2066 to the ballot in just seven weeks. The 546,000+ signatures gathered was the second-highest for a state initiative and the most gathered in over 50 years.

Each county certifies election results on Nov. 26, 2024. The Secretary of State certifies final results by Dec. 5, 2024.

Protecting natural gas

“I’m proud of the hard work of our members, our industry partners and Let’s Go Washington to protect the rights of our state’s families and businesses,” Lane said. “Natural gas helps families and businesses cook their food. It helps provide heat and warm water during power outages. And it’s a vital part of our state’s energy mix.”

Initiative 2066 will

  • Stop government from banning, restricting, or discouraging gas and gas appliances in homes, restaurants and other businesses.
  • Protect natural gas for heating, cooking and more.
  • Make sure gas utilities will continue to provide natural gas to customers who want it.
  • Protect people from having to switch to only electric energy.
  • Keep the power on when our energy grid is at capacity in super cold or hot weather.

Initiative 2066 will not

  • Force anyone to use natural gas or natural gas appliances.
  • Take away energy incentives and rebates for those who choose them.
  • Reduce the state’s commitment to addressing climate change.
