Building Codes Delayed
April 2, 2020
Gov. Inslee announced a delay in implementing the new state building codes from July 1 to Nov. 1. BIAW and the Washington Association of Building Officials had jointly asked the governor for the delay to ensure builders and officials could be adequately trained on the new codes prior to their implementation. This delay is crucial for our members to be fully educated on the changes in the codes and to allow for the materials to be available locally before the building codes are implemented.
Although the Stay-at-Home order has been extended to May 4, residential construction is still considered non-essential in the order. Throughout this crisis, working closely with all of the local building associations, BIAW has been actively communicating with the governor’s office that we are essential to Washington’s economy and, if allowed to resume, residential construction can and will protect our workforce and communities from COVID-19. We will continue delivering this message to the governor on behalf of you, your employees, and your customers.
As always, BIAW will also keep you informed on any changes, as well as let you know how you can help demonstrate to the governor that housing construction can resume while also keeping people healthy and safe.
