Builders direct code officials to comply with I-2066, protect natural gas

November 27, 2024

The Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) sent letters to local building code and elected officials, directing them to comply with I-2066 when applying the energy codes.

“Initiative 2066 will become law on Dec. 5, 2024,” said BIAW Executive Vice President Greg Lane. “We’re directing local jurisdictions to waive requirements under the 2021 Washington State Energy Code that penalize and discourage natural gas. The law now requires state and local governments to allow builders to move forward with projects that include natural gas as an energy source without penalty.”

BIAW also sent letters to county prosecutors and city attorneys, asking them to assist in ensuring compliance.

“We’ve notified all local building code officials they have the obligation and responsibility to comply with I-2066 when enforcing the energy code,” Lane said. “We’re asking prosecutors and city attorneys to assist them in complying.”

Building code officials must comply with I-2066

Approved by nearly 2 million voters, I-2066 bars the State Building Code Council from prohibiting, penalizing or discouraging the use of natural gas for heating, cooking or other appliances in any building.

It also prohibits all local governments from banning, restricting or disincentivizing the use of natural gas in new or existing home or commercial buildings.

“The people have spoken and now it’s time for Washington to comply with I-2066 and allow natural gas in homes and businesses,” Lane said.
