Meet 2019 Scholarship Winner Julian Garcia

BIAW is proud to award outstanding students in construction-related fields, apprenticeships and continuing education with scholarships. This year BIAW has 18 recipients who were chosen based on the applicant’s field of study, extracurricular activities and building industry work experiences. One of this year’s winners is 19-year-old Julian Garcia.
Meet Julian Garcia!
Age: 19
School: Bates Technical College
Field of study: Welding
Year in school: Finishing up the first year
Graduation date: 2020
Scholarship amount: $1,000
Hobbies: Welding, blacksmithing, and woodworking.
What got him into welding: “My high school [Yelm High School] had a home shop program and I just fell in love with it.”
Favorite part about welding: “The satisfaction when I fuse two pieces of metal together.”
Post-graduation goals: “I am thinking about joining the Navy for underwater welding and building programs.”
Proudest Accomplishment: “Getting my Eagle Scout status was really hard. I have been in Eagle Scouts since I was little and I completed this goal when I was 17/18.”
What he wants people to know about trade schools: “They are a lot of work, but will definitely pay off and pay off quicker than most college programs. You learn a lot of useful skills.”
