Contractors: Watch out for registration renewal scams
January 2, 2024
Construction contractors have been reporting new registration renewal scams where imposters attempt to fool them into paying $50 to renew their contractor registration.* Don’t bite!
Avoid registration renewal scams
L&I does not call contractors to demand they pay registration fees over the phone. The fraudsters claim to be from the “state of Washington” and then imply the contractors’ registration is suspended. They claim the contractor must pay $50 to get their license reinstated.
One customer told L&I he got an email with the same demand. Contractor Registration has received reports of this scam for several weeks.
What to do
If you receive a call that appears to be a scam, you can:
- Verify the status of your registration by looking up your name, UBI, or Contractor Registration number on L&I’s verification web page.
- Renew or reinstate your registration on L&I’s Contractor Registration web page.
- Contact Contractor Registration:
- Email – L&I’s Contractor Registration mailbox
- Toll-free – 1-800-647-0982
- Phone – 360-902-5226 (option 2)
