February 15, 2022
BIAW’s scholarship and grant program helps educate students going into a career in the trades and bridge the labor shortage gap in Washington state. Since the program’s inception, BIAW has rewarded over $750,000 to students and educational programs supporting the construction industry.
BIAW recently connected with some of our past scholarship recipients to see what they are up to now.
Meet Karis Van Diest
Karis Van Diest, a multi-year BIAW scholarship recipient, graduated from the Washington Polytechnic Institute in August of 2017 and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) in May of 2019. This gave her an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and title. She currently works at Axe Engineering Services in Bellingham, WA as a Civil Design Lead and Project Engineer.
Axe Engineering’s projects include civil engineering and design for multi-family, commercial, industrial and residential projects in Washington state, focused locally in Whatcom County.
“A career in construction lets you have a hand in shaping the future infrastructure of our communities,” Karis said.
